The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on 10 December 1948. To this day, this seminal document in modern human rights law is central to global standards. Using the seventieth anniversary of its adoption, the talk will examine the contemporary relevance of the Declaration to issues like migration, equality rights and xenophobia. The participation of Greece in the drafting of the Universal Declaration will also be discussed.
William Schabas is professor of international law at Middlesex University London. He is the author of many books and journal articles in the field of international human rights law. Professor Schabas has served in a variety of functions for the United Nations. His latest book is The Trial of the Kaiser, published by Oxford University Press.
